Home Tutor Duties

The role of a home tutor is a demanding and time-consuming one. It is fundamental to student success. If a student is to be successful in distance education, it is essential that the home tutor play an integral role in the program. Students are not able to teach themselves and need the on-going support of the home tutor. Before a decision is made to home school, prospective tutors need to be aware that:

  • The tutor needs to be thoroughly familiar with the Instruction Paper, Assignment Book and the program materials.
  • The tutor is required to review and mark their student's work where required before it is returned to the teacher.
  • Work is to be returned on a regular basis as per the Work Rate Guide, and in numerical sequence.
  • Feedback sheets are to be completed for most units of work. Where there are no specific sheets, feedback is required at the back of each paper.
  • Audio visual equipment is an essential requirement. It is used to determine the student's progress.
  • The tutor is required to maintain regular communication with the teacher using telephone, email, fax or written communication. Where scheduled telephone lessons are provided, students are expected to participate.
  • Adaptations to the programs may only be made in consultation with the teacher.
